Taking on Water at the Rudder -- Lots of water!
« on: August 05, 2007, 17:58:12 pm »
I'm back after a Relo from Dallas area to Cinci OH area.  I could not figure out how to search through old posts without having to go through all 53 pages of topics.  Any search help and help on how I can change my profile / add photo is appreiciated here.

I'm looking to save some time..... any advice on replacing what I'm assuming is a seal around the rudder post?  Seeing as it is mid season I want to know if there is a specific part for this or this is standard that any shop with a free hour can turn this around in a day or too max.  You all are familiar with the drill... "yes it really is a Toyota..."

As an aside:  I searched and downloaded some technical manuals.  The quality of the documentation has improved so much over the years that I know am going to attempt winterization and anual service myself.  Thanks to everyone that made/makes this and the other information possible!!!!!!  You guys rock!!!!

To search, either go to the homepage (http://www.epicmarine.com) and enter a term or set of terms in the search box just above all the posts and click "search". Or go to the forum and click on search in the black bar across the top.

To update your profile click on "user cp" (control panel) at the top of the page next to your username and you can edit and add an avatar. you must be logged in , of course.

Which model boat do you have?  Do you have a ballast system?  I thought I was taking in water in my boat until I took all the floorboards out and traced the leak and found that a fitting on my ballast system came loose.  I know this probably isn't related, but wanted to throw it out there because at one point I thought the same thing...  good luck.

I am curious why you say you are assuming it is the rudder seal. Can you tell us more? For instance, could it be the driveshaft packing? This is a common issue that is easily remedied by an adjustment.

Thanks Les.... I see the search now before I log-in.

On the leak.....I have S22 and I pulled the cover above the rudder in the stern locker and can see it gushing upwardes from the middle of the rudder plate.

I have an S22 and had a lot of water coming in below the back middle seat where the drive shaft is & the transmission & v-drive fluid can be checked.  When you say stern locker where do you mean?  The engine compartment?  Where the rudder comes up through the hull is below the engine compartment.

Mine was the packing around the drive shaft & all I had to do was take the cotter pin out and tighten the nylon nut to the next hole to put the cotter pin through.  Mine happened after it had not been used a number of months over the winter.

Clint, In the ski Locker in the back, there is a cover at the bottom that gives you access to the rudder. You have to be on the ski platform to see it.

Now that I've had a moment to search I see where some-one hit a log and had to replace the brass plate (I believe).  Capt Rick I sent you an email inquiring about the part.

I think the proper thing to do is reply to the other thread???

Les I don't see the black search bar when I'm logged in... can you pls. throw me another bone????

Thanks!

So, it's not actually black, it's gray. If you don't see something like this let me know.
