I was a squid. Tried to talk the kid into the Navy (easy duty and good training) but he had his heart set on the Marines. He's a big, smart, strapping outgoing kid, he will do very well in the military.

Hey you, where's a pic?

Army here (still in the guard) --- spent 11 months in iraq so far as an air traffic controller, E-5 type.   graduate college in may so trying to go air force national guard pilot....   Ktown & flyn2001 - what airframes did yall fly?      I was putting my applicatiom packet together before i totaled my motorcycle on 11 feb and spent 5 days in the hospital.   So going to wait till this summer to start re-applying.   Hopefully,  I'll still be able to do my water sports this summer but the doctors told me i should plan on being a full time boat driver this summer. - we'll see

Any ways congrats to Nicks in the Marines & God Bless America!!!

I can't claim any military experience (having one eye sort of excludes you from that sort of stuff), but I sure appreciate you guys who stick your necks out every day for the rest of us fat, tv watching slobs. My neighbor is a Ranger and has spent most of the past five years in either Afghanistan or Iraq. He says he can't tell us (or even his mother who keeps his house up for him while he's gone) what he is doing or where he is. I work with the Boy Scouts and we put a flag up in his yard the day he left for his first tour right after 911. His mom kept it there until the first time he came home nearly two years later. Last week, he came home for good (unharmed fortunately) and we lined our street from end to end with about 120 flags for him. His mom met with the scouts at church today, showed them the flag they had originally placed in his yard and cried her eyes out. That is one dedicated mom and son. You can see the hell he's been through in his face. Thanks for your service guys.

Me and Flyn2001 both flew C-17's (I'm actually a little older and flew the C-141 prior to that).  We have both spent our fair share of time in Afghanistan and Iraq.  Fortunately for us, we had the luxury to only visit a few hours at a time (to drop of troops and equipment).  I personally love what I do, and feel very blessed for the opportunity to serve my country flying airplanes.  That said, I believe the true hero's of our military are our youngest troops (especially Army and Marines) that are protecting our country with a pair of issued uniforms, boots, and a rifle.  I am constantly amazed at their resolve and professionalism.  Most of these guys chose to fight a war that our country doesn't always support and do so knowing that they will be in harms way.  That takes courage and shows true love of your country.  My message to everyone who cares; tell any young man or woman you see in uniform how proud you are of them, because no matter if you agree with our president or our politicians, that man or woman is swearing an oath to protect you and your way of life.  Nick, thank you for your commitment to your country and let us know if you need anything.  God speed

thats awesome-  if you ever flew into FOB Endurane aka QWest  about 35 miles south of mosul-  I lived, breathed, ate, slept in that air traffic control tower.  cleared a bunch of C-17's to land there BUT you guys never stayed long- kinda like you guys were scared or something- haha... actually if you remember that C-130 that crash landed in dec 2004 b/c the pilots didn't read the correct notams that was QWEST- long story short i was boots on groud about a month after that.  i'd post a pix but there on another computer...

C-17s are awesome...  I was/am hoping for F-16....

Got to get my epic running for this summer -  Summer 08' is kinda looking dry & fulled with sand if I don't cross into the blue and go air force guard...

Air Force here 7 years now.  Currently an executive assistant for the base commander and soon to be a recruiter.  No exciting deployments yet, unless you count a month in Hawaii as dangerous.

I don't mind the lack of deployments; it gives me more time with my Epic!

Only if you were surfing on the North Shore or hangin with Flyn2001's relatives.  Your Epic should definitely help the recruiting.

Marine Here!  8 years in reserves as a Combat Engineer.

I came across this article last week.  I hope this get's legs to establish Patriot Day on September 1.  Great way to show support of military members and their families.  I get to use as an excuse to finally get a round of golf in ;)
