Holy crap, I think you are right. I suppose there are some one-off parts I'd have to fab, right?

If you look at the Fresh Water Cooling maintenance pdf, it gives a listing of the parts (excluding the plastic box cover).

I assume you could get the heat exchanger bracket (made out of aluminum) from Monitor Products.  This is also probably true for the fill neck assembly, expansion tank and tubular thermostat housing.  The only other items (thermostat housing sleeve and thermostat housing gasket) may be unique to the engine.

As I posted earlier in this thread the t-stat gasket is not unique to the marine engine and is a two dollar part at Advance Auto.  Same for the thermostat, 170 degree, also available at Advance Auto.  I am using a piece of aluminum tube for the sleeve.  Since it is not stepped like the one from Toyota, there is a small ridge inside the t-stat housing that needs to be ground off (very easy).  Once I get my home brew system done I will post all the parts I used in one list with a short writeup.  And if you want a piece of aluminum tube (I have a 3 foot section) let me know.  But wait till I test the setup, that should be within the next 2 weeks or so.

Of course, since I have no installation constraints (i.e. it is going in a boat with alot of room around the engine), my installation may not be friendly to installation in your ski boat, YMMV.  However, once you understand how the fluids flow it is not hard to configure your own system.  And some of the parts I am using could be can no matter where you install the heat exchanger.

Rust, that is so cool. I may take you up on some of that tubing, I will eventually change my boat over to closed loop cooling. I don't care about trunk space, and the parts to do it the Toyota way are all available. I'll get a part made if I have to, ain't worried about it.
Please post more pics of your rig, that thing is gonna be COOL

Here is the Heat Exchanger cover with carpet.  The carpet doesn't quite match my original carpet color but close enough for the trunk.

Test drove the boat with the new fresh water cooling system.  It works great as far as I can tell.  The engine temp stayed around 160-170 degrees.

I was even bold enough to take it up to WOT at 6050 rpm's and the system held temp.

Did a preliminary test of the shower - hot water came out initially then turned cold.  I'll do more thorough testing at Lake Powell (Spring Break trip) later this week.

I also did a preliminary test of the heater and it seemed to work fine.

Let the season begin!

Knowing that you are pulling the shower hot water out before the exhaust manifolds the cold water doesn't suprise me.  If it were me, IMHO, I would remove the manifolds drain plugs, install a tee with a valve on the straight out for easy draining of the exhaust manifolds and then on the 90 of the tee hook in the shower.  Do this on both manifolds.  This way the shower will pull water from the heat exchanger then through the exhaust manifolds resulting in hot water for longer.  I don't see a down side to this but, maybe I am missing something.

Good luck, where do you boat on Powell?  We were up last Labor Day and saw an Epic.

Jon:

Thanks for the idea.  I'll do some more testing at Powell.

We normally go to Bullfrog Marina and stay in the mobile home trailers (don't confuse the pictures in the photo gallery of Bitzco with the trailer as me).  Spring and Fall school break is when we typically go - no crowds, cold water!

Okay I finally solved the riddle on why my shower ran cold with my Fresh Water Cooling system setup.  I guess when you approach 50 years old, brain cells don't function very well - I connected the hot and cold shower lines on backwards when I hooked it back up after installing the Fresh Water Cooling system and tapping into the exhaust manifold hoses from the heat exchanger!

Aren't you supposed to get hot water from the red knob - that what I thought when I did my initial testing but didn't think to check the blue knob until today at the lake.

I get great hot water when I turned on the cold water (blue) knob!?!  Good thing I solved this before our week-long Flaming Gorge camping trip in a few weeks.

I just swapped the lines to match the red/blue knobs on the shower so other won't be as confused as I was.
