Switches & switch lights crazy
« on: June 29, 2007, 05:16:29 am »
I did 8awg power wire to the dash upgrade, the dual battery with relay upgrade, and added a couple of amps/speakers.  Now my switches at the dash and ballast don't seem to work well in accessories or off position.

The ballast switches slowly blink when the key is in acc or off.  The dash switches won't work 75% of the time in acc.  When I do push them it turns on for 3 seconds and then goes back off and all the switch lights flash, etc.

I wired the 8awg power wire from starting battery to a terminal strip and then from there 10awg went to DECC terminal strip.   As a test I unhooked this new 8awg power wire and the switches were still messed up.

My dual battery relay setup is only connected when the key is turned on.
    -Negative terminals connected.
-Positive terminals connected at unswitched side of battery kill, then goes thru relay

Everything to run the boat is connected to the starting battery.
-Old 12awg and new 8awg connected to negative terminal
-Old fused 12awg and new fused 8awg connected to switched side of kill switch
-Also my head unit is connected to starting battery somehow thru the original OEM wires (the original 12awg).

Only amps are run off second battery.

Any idea as to why the switches are not functioning well?  Does the blinking mean anything?

Sorry for the long post but I just wanted to give as much detail as possible.
Thanks
Sean

OK...well after a week of verification, the cause of the problem was a bad starting battery.  It had a few cells shorted out and could not hold a charge.  Luckily my second battery always had enough power to get the boat started.   I don't know if the lights are supposed to flash by design but it is a nice feature to tell you that your battery is too low or bad.

Sean on my bilge pump (as an example) if I press the button one time it begins to flash, when I push it a second time it stays solid, third time it turns off. Have you tried this yet. Pat

Yeah i have seen that on some of my switches also, but very rarely.  Maybe 5 or 6 times a season.  And I haven't seen it now that I got a new battery but it hasn't been long enough to say for sure if that is fixed.
