New X22 Boat owner with some questions
« on: May 30, 2007, 04:53:51 am »
First off, without this site I probably would have never purchased my 2000 X22.  After reading all the positive experiences I made the dive into my boat.  I picked it up today from an individual and it ran like a top.  There were two issues though that I have questions about.  First, I tried the bilge pump and could not get it to come on, this leads into my question... um where is the bilge pump?  Secondly is about the steering, when i turn right it is nice and smooth, when i turn left it hangs and is hard to turn.  Are these boats hydraulic assist or manual?  I really dont want to pay someone to fix what i am capable of so any advice is welcomed and appreciated.  I am sure there will probably be some more gremlins to come up and I will for sure ask ya'll for help.  Thanks again and I am glad I am part of the Toyota Boat Family!!!
Mike

oh, and i will get some pics once it stops raining and I clean up the boat!!!

I had one other question, at idle the oil pressure is about 5-10psi.  At 2000+ RPM its in the 40-50 range.  Should I worry about a bad oil pump or something like that?  the previous owner said it has always been like that.  i may have trusted him too much but i want someone to warn me if that is not right.  Thanks...

Welcome to the site, and congrats on the new boat. There is a very recent thread about bilge pumps and their little hickups. check the pump stainer for what usually is filled with carpet fibers and funk. Oh yeah on the X22 they are a little difficult to get at. Its under the floor, right in front of the battery.

As for the oil pressure it is PERFECTLY NORMAL. If the low oil pressure alarm annoys you, you can change the oil pressure sending unit, check the archives for part numbers. it is very easy to replace.

for the steering.try lubing the rudder shaft, there is a zerk fitting near the trunk area.

If you're in Texas, we're having an Epic round-up on Lake Travis July 4th. 3 boats so far and looking for more!

Make sure you grease that steering rod as well as adding grease to the petcock. It will really free up the steering

well al little update.  Called around to the boat mechanics in my area today and they were all 2 weeks backed up so i decided to take my mechanical prowess and put it to work.  Changed the denso plugs, replaced the bilge pump (had an intermittant short) sucked out the oil and replaced it with Mobil 1 5w30 synthetic, sucked out the tranny fluid and replaced it with Pennzoil dexron III, Lubed up the steering shaft and rudder thingy, filled the surge brake reservoir, figured out how that blasted ballast system works..., figured out the guy before me hid chunks of concrete under the front storage compartments ( i guess they were for ballast...) found 3 coors lights in the built in cooler, found out there is a drain plug by the motor in the bottom of the boat, and generally made myself proud that in one day I know a TON about my boat, thanks to all of you guys here on this site.  Without your "how to's" and manuals I wouldnt have even attempted this.  Thanks Again, and I am sure I will have more questions...

I'm in Lubbock all the time on work. I'd love to see the boat. Alan Henry is pretty nice, and its only an hour from you. We'll have a mini-round-up there sometime

Glad you learned a little more about these amazing boats.  They are truly works of art.  I have learned all I know (which is a good amount, but not a ton) just from this site and the threads about random things plus applying the newly acquired car-knowledge I gained from working on my tow vehicle.
