Title: Steering Cable Snapped!!!
Post by: TXHNTR on July 16, 2007, 15:19:53 pm
was on the lake yesterday and all of the sudden SNAP.  Steering cable snapped somewhere down the line.  I have a new one on order but I am curious if anyone has replaced theirs or if there is a manual on how to replace it?  Any help is much appreciated!

yep. it is completely apparent that i was not overstating the problems with the steering... and i am SOOOOO glad i actually ordered a new cable last week and it came in today.  Looks like i have a little project ahead of me this week... but i am still looking for advice from anyone who has replaced it or has a manual on how to replace it...

Remove the cable from the rudder and pivot point. Maybe spray with WD 40 first.  Remove nut holding it on steering wheel cable, Depends on model boat. Pull old cable out of run but attach new cable at end WITH tie raps,,,,
Note the direction you turn steering wheel to unload inside cable.
INstall at rudder end...
Install at steering wheel secure nut. turn wheel and test that you have full rudder turn.

WHERE DID THE CABLE BREAK..?

Capt., if the cable is broken somewhere in the middle, fastening the new cable to it and pulling through isn't ging to work - right? Sounds like more of a sticky wicket than it seems-

I think what cap is talkin about is tie the new cable to the old and pull it threw the boat that way you pull it right where it needs to be like doing wiring!

turns out that the steering cable for an x22 is not 18ft long, its 19.  So the steering cable i ordered is incorrect.  Wonder if the captain can overnight the correct cable... since the boat is now in 50 pieces with no steering cable... HELP!!! getting the old one out was no big deal, just a lot of grease and dirtyness... putting the new one in will be a real pain, there is no way to follow the new one with the old.  looks like i am going to have to snake it...

well after talking with captain rick, i am going to send the 18footer back.  I dont want to fumble for an hour only to come up short.  I am trying to see if a local marina can get me a replacement cable before friday otherwise i will have to order the 19 footer and be extremely patient (which i am not...).  Thanks again for the help Rick and I will be in touch soon.

ok new update.  My local marina and i did some research. The new cable if anyone with an x22 needs one is the teleflex ssc6119.  it will be here tomorrow and i will probably end up putting it in tomorrow night.  I will update as to how it goes when i get done.

well i didnt get to take pics but it wasnt hard at all.  If you have a helper, and an electrical snake it was about an hour job altogether...  Short of almost cutting my thumb off while cutting the electrical tape off the snake... reminder to self, cut away from hands not towards!!!!  Overall it went right in and works great...
